Module 3.1: Scale & Spatial Data Aggregation

More detail is revealed at finer scales, thus smaller features may be lost entirely if presented in a small scale map. This can also affect the geometric properties of vector data and the slope of raster files adversely. Geometric properties, such as line lengths, polygon perimeter lengths, and the slopes of raster data tend to be underestimated at coarser scales.

The second part of our lab this week concerned Gerrymandering. Gerrymandering is the creation of political districts that possess an odd shape and/or size so that some form of political benefit may be reaped. This can be measured by examining the compactness of a political district, or how closely it approximates a circle. The screenshot above displays a political district that results from Gerrymandering.
